Genius Hour Intro

My genius hour project, writing a children's book, is primarily a creative project. As my research for the project, I am reading children's novels and examining what aspects of them are effective in order to take that knowledge and apply it while writing my own book. My plan for the four weeks that I have to do this project is to read and research children's novels for the first two weeks. During the second week, I plan to begin creating an outline for my own book. During the third week I plan to write the rough draft of the book, and during the fourth week I will edit and publish the final version of the story. When I present my Genius Hour project to the class, I will have a PowerPoint presentation where I will share what I learned from the novels that I researched, and how they benefited me while I was writing my own book. I will share the book trailer that I will create for my book and will read the first section of my book to the class.

When I am evaluated, I want to be assessed on my ability to read critically and recognize techniques used by other authors, as well as my ability to evaluate these techniques and effectively adopt the techniques which will improve my own writing, my ability to weave a moral into my story seamlessly, and my ability to create something distinct from the works that I have been inspired by. When I am making my presentation to the class I want to be assessed on my passion while speaking and ability to present my project clearly. I want to be assessed on these things because these are the goals that I have personally set for myself, and because they directly relate to my project. Below is the rubric that I discovered on Scoop-It. I chose this rubric because it includes "creativity" as one of the categories, and, unlike some other rubrics, all of the categories apply to my project.
